TWO TAXIS ILLUSTRATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE AT LUCAS; THESE ACCELERATE FROM 0 TO 40 KM/H IN 9 SECONDS, HAVE A MAXIMUM SPEED OF OVER 96 KM/H AND HAVE A RANGE OF 160 KM IN URBAN TRAFFIC. STUDIES WERE UNDERTAKEN TO ESTABLISH THE ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE. THE LUCAS SOLUTION PROVIDES FOR THE SO-CALLED POLYPROPYLENE-SLI-CONSTRUCTION, THE ENERGY DENSITY AND CYCLE OF WHICH CAN BE IMPROVED TO AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP A BATTERY WITH A FIVE HOUR DISCHARGE AND A LIFE OF 400 - 500 CHARGE CYCLES. THERE IS ALSO A HYDRAULIC GIRLING SERVO BRAKE WITH AN EFFECTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM WHICH CONVERTS THE BRAKING ENERGY INTO RE-USABLE POWER AND RETURNS IT TO THE BATTERY.
