THE AUTHORS PRESENT THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL STUDIES OF SANDY SOIL WITH A VIEW TO DERIVING A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF A SOIL FOR INVESTIGATING PRESSIOMETER PROBLEMS AND PROBLEMS OCCURRING IN THE VICINITY OF A PILE. THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN A FLAT CYLINDRICAL TANK. THE TWO-DIMENSIONAL, NON-LINEAR, AXIAL-SYMMETRY PROBLEM IS SOLVED BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FROM THE EXACT SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF THE ELASTICITY OF A RING.
