SPECIAL ASPECTS OF THE IN-DEPTH THERMAL STABILITY OF SOIL AND POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS METHOD OF STABILIZATION

THIS ARTICLE REVIEWS THE STUDIES CONDUCTED OVER SEVERAL YEARS TO INVESTIGATE THE LONG-TERM BEHAVIOUR OF THERMALLY STABILIZED SOILS. IT SHOWS THE LAWS OF TIME-RELATED VARIATIONS IN THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS: COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, COHESION, MODULUS OF DEFORMATION, POISSON'S RATIO, ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION. CORRELATIONS WITH LABORATORY RESULTS ARE GIVEN. A MULTIPLE CORRELATION EQUATION IS DEDUCED FOR LONG-TERM STRENGTH, STABILIZATION TEMPERATURE, AND TIME AFTER STABILIZATION. RESULTS OBTAINED WITH VARIOUS PROCESSES OF HEATING SOIL IN DEPTH ARE PRESENTED FOR 4 TYPES OF LOESS AND CLAYEY SOIL. THE HEATING WAS ACHIEVED BY MEANS OF LIQUID FUELS, GASES OR ELECTRICAL RESISTANCES. THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES, AND THE FIELDS OF USE OF THE PROCESSES DESCRIBED ARE DISCUSSED.
