WHEN THE RELATIONS BETWEEN TRAFFIC DENSITY, TRAFFIC FLOW AND AVERAGE INSTANTANEOUS SPEED (FUNDAMENTAL DIAGRAM) ARE KNOWN, THE QUALITY OF TRAFFIC FLOW CAN BE ESTIMATED. INFLUENCING FACTORS ARE: WEATHER, STANDARD OF FINISH, ALIGNMENT, TRAFFIC COMPOSITION. MODEL ANALYSIS AND DATA OBTAINED FROM MOTORWAY A1 SHOWED THAT THE CAPACITY OF A TWO-LANE UNI-DIRECTIONAL CARRIAGEWAY AMOUNTED TO 3500 VEHICLES PER HOUR WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT LORRY TRAFFIC. FOR AN 11% LORRY PROPORTION THE FIGURE IS 3000 VEHICLES/H. FOR A THREE-LANE UNI-DIRECTIONAL CARRIAGEWAY A TRAFFIC CAPACITY OF 4500 TO 4600 VEHICLES/H WAS ACHIEVED. FOR A DUAL LANE CARRIAGEWAY WITHOUT LORRY TRAFFIC, THE FREE SPEED IS 130-135 KM/H AND 125-130 WHEN THE LORRY PROPORTION IS 11%. FOR THREE-LANE CONDITIONS THE SPEEDS ARE SOMEWHAT LOWER.
