EXPERIENCES WITH COLOURED CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES FOR BETTER TRAFFIC CONTROL

COLOURED ROAD MARKINGS ARE INTENDED TO SUPPORT THE NORMAL METHODS FOR THE CONTROL OF TRAFFIC FLOW. THEY ENABLE VEHICLES TO GET INTO LANES MORE EASILY AT CROSSINGS AND THEY HELP DRIVERS TO REACH THEIR DESTINATIONS WITHOUT DETOURS. COLOURED WEARING COURSES LOSE THEIR EFFECTIVENESS IN TIME BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF METHODS OF COLOURING ROAD CONCRETE, CONCRETED SETT AND BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS. EXPERIMENTAL COLOURING HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON SURFACINGS BY PAINTING, BUT THIS REDUCES RESISTANCE TO SKIDDING. COLOURED SURFACINGS HAVE A DISADVANTAGEOUS EFFECT IF THERE IS A CHANGE IN THE TRAFFIC CONCEPT. THE INSTALLATION OF STREET LIGHTING WILL ALSO CAUSE A LOSS IN THEIR EFFECT. PAST RESULTS SHOW THAT THERE IS NO INCREASE IN TRAFFIC EFFICIENCY DUE TO COLOURED CARRIAGEWAY MARKINGS, AND THEY ARE ENVISAGED ONLY FOR CRITICAL POINTS IN THE ROAD NETWORK.
