ASSESSMENT OF THE STABILITY OF ROLLED ASPHALT WEARING COURSES WITH THE AID OF THE WHEEL-TRACKING TEST

THE EQUIPMENT WHICH HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF STABILITY OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES (AHMT) SIMULATES THE STRESSING OF PAVEMENTS BY HIGH WHEEL LOADS, LOW TRAVEL SPEED, LANE TRAFFIC, BRAKING AND STARTING LOADS AS WELL AS HIGH SURFACING TEMPERATURES; THE SIMULATION IS CARRIED OUT REALISTICALLY IN THE LABORATORY. THE EQUIPMENT CONSISTS OF A COMPACTION DEVICE WHERE TEST SLABS OF 28 X 25 CM ARE PRODUCED BY ROLLER COMPACTION WITH A SMOOTH TYRE AND A PLAIN CYLINDER ROLLER AS WELL AS A TRACK FORMING DEVICE FOR CARRYING OUT THE TEST. THIS INVOLVES ROLLING A SOLID RUBBER TYRED WHEEL WITH A LOAD OF 0.7 N/MM2 ON A TEST SLAB WHICH HAS BEEN HEATED TO 40-50 DEGREE C AT A SPEED OF 1.1 KM/H IN A SINUSOIDAL MOTION TO AND FRO. THE TEST MEASUREMENT IS THE TRACK DEPTH AFTER 3 HOURS (100 THOUSAND ROLLING MOVEMENTS), THE TIME FACTOR IS ALSO TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. AS AN EXAMPLE OF APPLICATIONS, THE INFLUENCE OF THE BINDER CONTENT ON THE STABILITY OF ROLLED ASPHALT IS SHOWN, ALSO THAT OF THE TYPE OF BINDER MATERIAL AS WELL AS VARIOUS PLASTIC MATERIAL ADMIXTURES TO THE BINDER MATERIAL.
