STUDIES ON PERMANENTLY DEFORMED BITUMINOUS LAYERS

UNTERSUCHUNGEN AN BLEIBEND DEFORMIERTEN BITUMINOESEN SCHICHTEN

PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS OCCUR IN THE BITUMINOUS LAYERS OF MANY SWISS MOTORWAY SECTIONS SUBJECTED TO HIGH TRAFFIC LOADING. THESE COURSES WERE LAID MAINLY BETWEEN 1965 TO THE BEGINNING OF THE 1970'S. THE EMPA CARRIED OUT NUMEROUS TECHNICAL STUDIES OF THESE SECTIONS. IT INVOLVED CUTTING PIECES FROM THE BITUMINOUS COURSES OVER THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE NORMAL TRAFFIC LANE AND EXAMINING THESE IN THE LABORATORY. FROM THESE SPECIMENS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDIVIDUAL LAYERS WAS DETERMINED. THE USUAL LABORATORY STUDIES WERE EXTENDED TO INCLUDE CREEP TESTS. THE RESULTS ARE COMMENTED UPON AND COMPARED WITH ONE ANOTHER.
