THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION ON THE FORMATION OF WHEEL TRACKS IN PAVEMENTS MADE FROM BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

THE MAXIMUM SHEAR STRESS AND THE PERMISSIBLE ALTERNATING STRESSES WHICH OCCUR UNDER VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOADING IN SUMMER WERE ESTABLISHED FOR A 22 CM THICK BITUMINOUS ROADBASE MADE FROM CRUSHED ROCK AND RESTING ON SUBSOIL (E = 1000 KP/CM2); THE CALCULATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH THE AID OF THE MULTICOURSE THEORY. THE SAME CALCULATION WAS CARRIED OUT FOR VARIOUS THICKNESSES OF A BITUMINOUS ROADBASE OF ROUNDED AGGREGATE RESTING ON A FORMATION WITH E = 1500 KP/CM2 AND A DIFFERENT TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION (MEAN SUMMER TEMPERATURE DURING DAYTIME). THE RESULTS SHOW THAT PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS CAN OCCUR IN THE UPPER ZONE OF THE PAVEMENT AND IN PAVEMENTS OF LITTLE THICKNESS DUE TO OVERLOADING. THE SHEAR STRENGTH CAN BE INCREASED BY USING HARDER BITUMEN MATERIALS AND CRUSHED AGGREGATES AS WELL AS BY USING A MODERATE AMOUNT OF BINDER MATERIAL. IT IS POINTED OUT IN THIS CONNECTION, THAT IF THE SOFTENING POINT OF BITUMEN OBTAINED BY RING AND BALL TEST IS INCREASED BY 5 DEGREES C, THE PERMISSIBLE ALTERNATING LOAD FACTOR INCREASES BY ABOUT A POWER OF TEN.
