WATER SENSITIVITY OF FILLER IN BITUMINOUS ROAD CONSTRUCTION

INVESTIGATIONS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE TYPE OF FILLER HAS A DECISIVE EFFECT ON THE WATER SENSITIVITY OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS. IN LIME FILLERS AND MATERIALS CONTAINING LIMESTONE THE BEHAVIOUR OF SWELLING COMPONENTS IS SLOWED DOWN IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF CALCIUM IONS. IN SPITE OF THE BITUMEN SURROUNDING EVERY MINERAL PARTICLE, THE MINERAL MATERIALS HAVE A RECIPROCAL INFLUENCE ON EACH OTHER. IT IS NECESSARY TO CARRY OUT SWELLING TESTS ON THE BITUMEN MATERIAL READY FOR USE. SWELLING TESTS ON FILLER-BITUMEN MIXTURES WILL LEAD TO FAULTY RESULTS. DUE TO THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THE INVESTIGATIONS IT IS POSSIBLE TO IMPROVE LESS SUITABLE MINERALS FOR BITUMINOUS MATERIALS BY LIMESTONE POWDER. THE EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH REALISTIC POROSITIES OF 56% BY VOLUME. THE FILLER USED WAS: LAVA, GRAUWACKE, FLY ASH, MORAINE CRUSHED STONE SAND, LIMESTONE.
