INFLUENCE OF TEST CONDITIONS ON THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF ASPHALT SPECIMENS IN CREEP TESTS

IN ORDER TO BE IN A POSITION TO MAKE COMPARISONS OF THE RESULTS OF CREEP TESTS FROM VARIOUS LABORATORIES, IT IS NECESSARY THAT THE TEST CONDITIONS SHOULD BE EXACTLY ESTABLISHED. IN THIS PAPER THE DISCUSSION CENTRES PARTICULARLY ON TEST TEMPERATURES, TEST SAMPLES, LOADING LEVELS, LOADING TIMES, LOAD APPLICATION, AND THE CONTACT BETWEEN THE TEST SAMPLE AND THE LOADING PLATE. FOR THESE CONTACT POINTS A MEANS, CONSISTING OF TWO RUBBER MEMBRANES AND A LAYER OF FAT BETWEEN THEM, WAS FOUND WHICH ELIMINATES BULGING EFFECTS IN STRESSED SAMPLES. THE INDIVIDUAL TEST SPECIFICATIONS ARE TREATED WITH THE AID OF STATISTICS. THE LAST SECTION EXAMINES SCATTER IN THE TEST RESULTS. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO DETERMINE THE SOURCES OF INACCURACIES AND LACK OF UNIFORMITY IN AN ANALYSIS. THE TEST SAMPLE ITSELF EMERGES AS A MAIN CONTRIBUTOR.
