TIME AND TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

ZEIT- UND TEMPERATURABHAENGIGKEIT DER MECHANISCHEN BAUSTOFFEIGENSCHAFTEN

AS TIME AND TEMPERATURE DEPENDENT BEHAVIOUR PLAY AN EVER GREATER ROLE IN THE ENGINEERING APPLICATION OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE RANGE OF RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE BE WIDELY EXTENDED FOR CONCRETE, PLASTICS AND BITUMINOUS MATERIALS. THESE PROBLEMS CANNOT BE TREATED INDIVIDUALLY FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND FOR EACH SPECIAL APPLICATION. IT IS MUCH BETTER TO ATTEMPT AN ANALOGY PROCEDURE, USING EXPERIENCE GAINED WITH VARIOUS MATERIALS. THE TIME-DEPENDENT BEHAVIOUR IS EXPLAINED BRIEFLY ON THE BASIS OF CONCRETE CREEP AS AN EXAMPLE, AND NUMEROUS POINTS OF INTEREST ARE REPORTED AS WELL AS THE SIGNIFICANCE FOR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE. PLASTICS ARE USED AS AN EXAMPLE OF A MATERIAL WHICH DEMONSTRATES, BOTH TIME-DEPENDENCE AND AN EXCEPTIONAL DEGREE OF TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE, AND EXPRESSIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR TAKING THESE INTO ACCOUNT IN DESIGN, INCLUDING SIMPLIFICATIONS USING THE TIME-TEMPERATURE SUPER-POSITION LAW. FINALLY, ON THE BASIS OF THE EXPERIENCES WITH THESE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS SOME RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR RESEARCH INTO TIME AND TEMPERATURE DEPENDENT BEHAVIOUR OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS.
