THE LAYING AND BEHAVIOUR OF UNBOUND ROAD BASES IN HEAVILY TRAFFICKED ROADS

EINBAU UND VERHALTEN VON UNGEBUNDENEN TRAGSCHICHTEN IN SCHWER BELASTETEN STRASSEN

FOR THIRTY YEARS EFFORTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO DESIGN ROAD PAVEMENTS BY MEANS OF CALCULATION. IN SPITE OF A HIGH LEVEL OF MATHEMATICAL PERFECTION, IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO APPLY IT IN PRACTICE. THIS CONCERN FOR A PRACTICAL DESIGN PROCEDURE HAS HOWEVER PRODUCED AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE ACTION OF FORCES IN A HIGHWAY WHICH ENABLES BETTER CONSTRUCTION TO BE UNDERTAKEN AND MATERIALS TO BE OPTIMIZED. TECHNICAL REGULATIONS RSTO 75, ZTVE-STB 76 AND THE STANDARDIZED SPECIFICATIONS OF CERTAIN FEDERAL PROVINCES ARE BASED ON THIS UNDERSTANDING. A CONTINUOUS INCREASE IN STIFFNESS FROM THE EXISTING UNBOUND SOIL VIA THE LOWER UNBOUND ROADBASE TO THE BITUMINOUS ROADBASE IS ONE OF THE PRACTICAL EFFECTS WHICH HAS BEEN INTRODUCED INTO THE REGULATIONS FOR LOWER SAXONY FOR THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF BITUMINOUS CARRIAGEWAYS EBA NS 76. THE AUTHOR DEALS WITH THIS IN DETAIL AND ALSO IN THE INCREASE IN DEFORMATION VALUES BY THE USE OF APPROPRIATELY THICK LAYERS OF GRADED GRAVEL AGGREGATE. EXAMPLES FROM THE HANOVER AREA SERVE AS DESCRIPTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS FOR COST COMPARISON. SUGGESTIONS FOR CERTAIN EXTENSIONS TO THE SPECIFICATIONS ARE PROVIDED. THE INCREASED USE OF ROAD BASES WITH UNBOUND AGGREGATE IN HIGHLY TRAFFICKED ROADS REQUIRES THE SAME SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE AND CARE AS THE CONSTRUCTION OF BOUND ROAD BASES AND PARTICULARLY IN THE PREPARATION IN THE QUARRY. RESULTS FROM INVESTIGATIONS SHOW THAT UNBOUND ROAD BASES ARE COMPARABLE TO OTHER CARRIAGEWAY CONSTRUCTIONS IN TERMS OF LENGTH OF LIFE, QUALITY AND ECONOMY.
