THE LAYING OF AN ASPHALT DRAINAGE CARPET ON FEDERAL MOTORWAYS

WHERE A CARRIAGEWAY HAS INSUFFICIENT LONGITUDINAL FALL, PARTICULARLY IN LENGTHS HAVING A CHANGE OF CROSSFALL, DIFFICULTIES MAY BE EXPERIENCED IN REMOVING SURFACE WATER AND THIS CAN AFFECT THE SAFETY OF TRAFFIC. IN SUCH CASES THE FORMATION OF A TRAPPED FILM OF WATER MAY BE HINDERED BY THE USE OF AN ASPHALT DRAINAGE CARPET. IN MOTORWAY TRIALS A CARPET WAS LAID USING HOT ROLLED ASPHALT 0/16 MM WITH A VOID CONTENT OF 15% (VOLUME). BINDERS WERE STANDARD BITUMEN B65 AND A MODIFIED ELASTOMER BITUMEN. COMPACTION WITH RUBBER-TYRED AND VIBRATING ROLLERS CAUSED NO DIFFICULTIES. THE ANTICIPATED DRAINAGE EFFECT WAS FULLY ACHIEVED, WHICH MEANS THAT A VOID-CONTENT OF 15% (VOLUME) GUARANTEES A CONSIDERABLE STORAGE CAPACITY, ENABLING THE STANDARD DESIGN STORM RAINFALL 8 MINUTES TO BE COMPLETELY ABSORBED BY THE VOIDS. THE SKID-RESISTANCE OF THE DRAINAGE ASPHALT IS, ACCORDING TO TEST MEASUREMENTS, HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE USUAL HOT ROLLED ASPHALT CARPETS.
