SOME EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS ON THE CLASSIFICATION OF OPTICAL BEHAVIOUR OF ROAD SURFACES

EINIGE EXPERIMENTELLE ERGEBNISSE ZUR CHARAKTERISIERUNG DES OPTISCHEN VERHALTENS VON STRASSENDECKSCHICHTEN

THE AUTHOR REPORTS UPON THE BRIGHTNESS REFLECTIONS OF CERTAIN WIDELY DISTRIBUTED CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES. IN THE COURSE OF THIS THE INFLUENCE IS INVESTIGATED WHICH THE COMPOSITION OF THE SURFACE, ABRASION AND THE DRY OR WET CONDITION EXERTS UPON THE OPTICAL EMISSION INDICATOR. KNOWLEDGE OF THE INDICATOR ALLOWS, FOR A GIVEN OBSERVATION POSITION, THE DETERMINATION OF BRIGHTNESS DISTRIBUTION AND WITH CERTAIN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THE TRANSFER OF IT FROM THE ISOLUX CURVE NETWORK TO THE CORRESPONDING ISONITE CURVE NETWORK. THE SAMPLES INVESTIGATED WERE IDR TAKEN FROM LENGTHS ALREADY IN USE BY TRAFFIC. A HALOGEN LIGHT SOURCE WAS USED WITH REFLECTION ARRANGEMENTS TO ACHIEVE DIRECTIONAL LIGHTING. THE TRIAL CONDITIONS, DETERMINATION OF THE BRIGHTNESS FACTOR, THE ILLUMINATION CONDITIONS, THE BRIGHTNESS MEASUREMENTS AS WELL AS MANUFACTURE, COMPOSITION, AGE AND TRAFFIC VOLUMES OF THE SAMPLE SURFACES (ROLLED ASPHALT MOTORWAYS, AVERAGE 6 YEARS OLD; SURFACE SEALED WITH BITUMINOUS SLURRY; WEARING COURSE WITH DECELERATION STRIPES) ARE PROVIDED AND THE RESULTS OF THE BRIGHTNESS MEASUREMENTS FOR DRY AND WET SURFACES ARE PRESENTED IN DIAGRAMMATIC FORM. FINALLY TO CLASSIFY THE OPTICAL BEHAVIOUR WHEN CHANGING FROM WET TO DRY CONDITIONS A PARAMETER IS DEFINED AND INTRODUCED, WHICH ALLOWS A PROGRESSION ACCORDING TO INCREASING VALUES.
