THE ARLBERG TUNNEL, 13.97 KM LONG, IS THE LONGEST ROAD TUNNEL IN THE WORLD. IT WAS CONSTRUCTED BY 1200 WORKERS IN 53 MONTHS. 1.75 MILLION CU METRES OF ROCK WERE BLASTED. 16000 TONNES OF STEEL COMPONENTS AND 720000 CU M OF CONCRETE WERE USED. MACHINES HAVING AN OUTPUT OF 27400 KW WERE IN OPERATION. THE TOTAL COST, INCLUDING THE SERVICING OF CAPITAL, WAS 655 MIO DM. THE HISTORY OF THE ARLBERG ROUTE AND THE TRAFFIC SITUATION CONCERNING THE TUNNEL ARE DESCRIBED. THE ALIGNMENT RESULTS FROM THE GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS. TWIN BORE TUNNELS ARE PROPOSED FOR THE COMPLETED PROJECT. THE COMPLETED LENGTH OF TUNNEL HAS A CARRIAGEWAY 7.5 M WIDE AND 0.95 M WIDE MARGINS. LIGHTING HAS A HEIGHT OF 4.7 M. VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS ARE BASED UPON A TRAFFIC FLOW OF 1800 VEHICLES PER HOUR AND AN ALLOWABLE CO CONCENTRATION OF 150 PPM. FRESH AIR IS INTRODUCED BY TRANSVERSE VENTS. TWO VENTILATION INSTALLATIONS WERE NECESSARY AT THE PORTALS TOGETHER WITH TWO PUMPS IN ROCK CAVERNS. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE VENTILATING MACHINERY INSTALLED AMOUNTS TO 11.2 MW. THE TUNNEL IS LIT THROUGHOUT BY A CONTINUOUS BAND OF 40 W FLUORESCENT TUBES. ADAPTION LENGTHS FACILITATE THE CHANGE TO DAYLIGHT. THE TUNNEL IS CONTROLLED FROM A CENTRAL OPERATIONS OFFICE. IT ALLOWS FOR EMERGENCY CALLS, FIRE ALARMS, TRAFFIC COUNTING, CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION SUPERVISION, LAY-BY NICHES, VENTILATION CONTROL. THE 16.1 KM LONG CONSTRUCTION LENGTH WAS BUILT IN 3 SECTIONS BY 3 CONSTRUCTION FIRMS. THE NEW AUSTRIAN TUNNELLING METHOD WAS APPLIED, WHICH INCLUDED THE CONTINUOUS SPRAYING OF A CONCRETE LINING (SHOTCRETE) AFTER THE REMOVAL OF ROCK AND THE USE WHERE NECESSARY OF ROCK ANCHORS TO AVOID ROCK LOOSENING. THE INTERNAL ARCH WAS CONSTRUCTED IN A SECOND OPERATION.
