THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF A MEASURING PROCESS FOR THE COMPREHENSION AND DEPICTION OF THE HYDRAULIC ROUGHNESS OF CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES

THE OBJECT OF THE WORK WAS TO DEVELOP A SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENT TO DETERMINE THE FLOW PATTERN OF WATER IN A SURFACE DRAINAGE SYSTEM. IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE GEOMETRIC SURFACE CONFIGURATION (ROUGHNESS) A STATIONARY SCANNING INSTRUMENT WITH INTERMITTENT PERFORMANCE WAS USED, WHICH ALSO ALLOWED FOR THE SCANNING OF HIGHLY FISSURED SURFACES. SO THAT NON-DESTRUCTIVE AND REPETITIVE MEASUREMENTS OF THE SAMPLE ROADS COULD BE MADE, THE INVESTIGATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT ON PLASTIC REPRODUCTIONS, MANUFACTURED BY A POSITIVE-NEGATIVE CASTING PROCESS. TO ESTIMATE THE DRAINAGE CAPACITY OF CARRIAGEWAY SURFACES, A NEW DISCHARGE APPARATUS WAS DEVELOPED HAVING A RUBBER FOOT THE SIZE OF A RUBBER TYRE CONTACT AREA. IT WORKS WITH COMBINED WATER AND CONTACT PRESSURE OF UP TO 4 BAR AND IS SUITABLE FOR ESTABLISHING THE DISCHARGE PERFORMANCE OF NEARLY ALL NORMALLY OCCURRING ROUGH ROAD SURFACES. THE INVESTIGATION WAS CARRIED OUT ON TEN AREAS WITH WIDELY VARYING ROUGHNESS FACTORS. THE EVALUATION OF PROFILE AND DISCHARGE MEASUREMENTS SHOWS THAT A SUBSTANTIALLY SIGNIFICANT DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE DIFFERING SURFACE ROUGHNESS MAY BE FOUND WITH THE AID OF THIS PROCESS. THE NEWLY DEVELOPED DISCHARGE APPARATUS ALSO ALLOWS FOR THE FIRST TIME A RELATIVE ASSESSMENT OF COARSE SURFACES.
