MOIRE-TOPOGRAPHY FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE SURFACE STRUCTURE OF ROADS

MOIRE-TOPOGRAPHIE ZUR BESTIMMUNG DER OBERFLAECHENSTRUKTUR VON STRASSEN

THE GEOMETRIC FORM OF THE ROAD SURFACE IS GENERALLY SUFFICIENTLY DESCRIBED BY A LONGITUDINAL PROFILE AND AN APPROPRIATE NUMBER OF CROSS-SECTIONS. FOR THE REPRESENTATION OF LONGITUDINAL PROFILES AND CROSS-SECTIONS A SERIES OF INSTRUMENTS IS AVAILABLE. IF A CLOSED 3-DIMENSIONAL REPRESENTATION IS REQUIRED A PHOTOGRAPHIC METHOD HAS TO BE USED. THE MOST RENOWNED METHOD IS STEREO-PHOTOGRAMMETRY WHICH REQUIRES HOWEVER A SUBSTANTIAL WORK INPUT FOR ITS EVALUATION. ANOTHER METHOD IS THE MOIRE-TOPOGRAPHY DEVELOPED BY TAKASAKI WHICH HAS BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY SINCE 1970 BY THE MEDICAL PROFESSION AT THE VIENNA UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE. IN MOIRE-TOPOGRAPHY THE SURFACE SHAPE IS MADE GRAPHIC BY A REPRESENTATION OF CONTOURS. THE CONTOURS ORIGINATE WHEN THE OBJECT IS ILLUMINATED BY A PUNCTIFORM LIGHT SOURCE THROUGH A GRID, ARRANGED AS A FLAT SURFACE WITH A UNIFORM ARRANGEMENT OF PARALLEL TRANSLUCENT AND OPAQUE STRIPS. USING A PAVEMENT SEGMENT ON THE INNER DRUM-TEST BED AT THE VIENNA CEMENT RESEARCH INSTITUTE, IT IS SHOWN THAT MOIRE-TOPOGRAPHY IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR DESCRIBING ROAD SURFACES. THE AUTHOR IS OF THE OPINION THAT WITH THE VARIABILITY OF THE SYSTEM IN THE IMAGE- OR OBJECT SIZE AND IN ITS SOLUTION CAPACITY, GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF THE SURFACE STRUCTURE IS ALSO POSSIBLE. USING APPROPRIATE INTERPRETATION, DATA ON THE MACRO- AND MICRO ROUGHNESS COULD BE OBTAINED WITH THIS TECHNIQUE.
