THE DIMENSIONING AND CONSTRUCTION OF MOTORWAYS IN BITUMINOUS CONSTRUCTION

BEMESSUNG UND KONSTRUKTION VON AUTOBAHNEN IN BITUMINOESER BAUWEISE

EXPERIENCES WITH THE BEHAVIOUR OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS AT EXTREME TEMPERATURES HAS PROVED CLEARLY THAT THE STRUCTURAL DIMENSIONING ALONE IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO AVOID DAMAGE. THE AUTHOR IS OF THE OPINION THAT A COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN METHOD MUST INCORPORATE THE CHOICE OF MIX MATERIALS AND THE STIPULATED REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BITUMINOUS LAYERS, WHICH CONSIDERS THE LOADING CONDITIONS AT BOTH VERY LOW AND VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES. THE CONSTRUCTION AND DIMENSIONING ARE DESCRIBED USING AS AN EXAMPLE A SWISS TRUNK ROAD WITH VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC (1500 - 4500 LORRIES/24 HOURS) WITH RELATION TO THE SOIL CLASSIFICATION AND TYPE OF ROAD BASE. THE RESULTS OF THE THICKNESSES DETERMINED ARE SHOWN SCHEMATICALLY FOR FIVE TYPES OF UPPER COURSE CONSTRUCTION. FOR THE EXECUTION OF FLEXIBLE UPPER COURSE CONSTRUCTION, COMPARISONS ARE MADE BETWEEN VARIOUS TECHNICALLY EQUAL ALTERNATIVES, WHICH HAVE PROVED TO BE ACCEPTABLE IN PRACTICE. WITH THIS THE PLANNING ENGINEER CAN TAKE INTO ACCOUNT LOCAL CONDITIONS CORRECTLY, APPROPRIATE TO THE DIFFERENT MATERIALS AVAILABLE. IN ADDITION GUIDE VALUES ARE GIVEN FOR THE COMPOSITION OF MIX MATERIALS IN THE ROAD BASE, BINDING COURSE AND WEARING COURSE AND THEIR PROPERTIES. THESE ARE IN CONTRAST TO PREVIOUS VALUES, IN ORDER TO WITHSTAND TRAFFIC LOADINGS EVEN AT HIGH TEMPERATURES AND WITH A HIGH PROPORTION OF HEAVY TRAFFIC.
