BEHAVIOUR PATTERNS OF PARKED TRAFFIC - THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY IN WEST BERLIN

VERHALTENSWEISEN IM RUHENDEN VERKEHR - ERGEBNISSE EINER BEFRAGUNG IN BERLIN (WEST)

THIS SURVEY OF DRIVERS CONDUCTED IN BERLIN IN 1979 SERVED AS A BASIS FOR REVISIONS TO THE PARKING INFORMATION SYSTEM WHICH SHOULD ACHIEVE A REDUCTION IN TIMES SPENT LOOKING FOR PARKING PLACES AND A BETTER UTILISATION OF ALL THE PARKING PLACES IN BERLIN INNER-CITY. IN THE CITY THERE ARE 8000 PUBLICLY AVAILABLE PARKING PLACES IN MULTISTOREY PARKING GARAGES, 800 ON PRIVATE LAND AND 4200 ON PUBLIC ROADS AVAILABLE FOR THE MOTORIST. THE MULTISTOREY PARKING GARAGES ARE FILLED TO VARYING DEGREES. THE QUESTION SHEET USED IN THE SURVEY IS REPRODUCED IN THE PAPER. APPROXIMATELY 2000 QUESTION SHEETS WERE ABLE TO BE PROCESSED AND DRIVERS WERE QUESTIONED DIRECTLY AFTER PARKING; THOSE QUESTIONED HAD PREDOMINANTLY FIXED PARKING HABITS. THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON FOR THE CHOICE OF PARKING PLACE IS THE PROXIMITY OF IT TO THE DRIVER'S DESTINATION. LOWER USAGE OF MULTISTOREY PARKING GARAGES IS DUE MAINLY TO THEIR UNFAVOURABLE SITING FOR TRAFFIC. AVERAGE PARKING DURATION WAS BETWEEN 75 MINUTES ON A THURSDAY AND 100 MINUTES ON A SATURDAY.
