COMPARISON OF METHODS OF MEASURING WHEEL LOAD FLUCTUATIONS

FOUR METHODS OF MEASUREMENT FOR WHEELED VEHICLES WHICH CAN TRAVEL OVER TERRAIN WERE EXAMINED: THE KOTITSCHKE METHOD, THE TYRE SPRING TRAVEL AND THE TYRE PRESSURE METHODS, AND THE AXLE BENDING STRESS METHOD. THE TESTS SHOWED THAT NONE OF THE METHODS IS ENTIRELY SATISFACTORY. THE BEST IS THE KOTITSCHKE METHOD, ESPECIALLY AS MEASURING ACCURACY CAN BE IMPROVED FOR FREQUENCIES OVER 0.75 HZ IF THE FREQUENCY RELATION OF ERROR IS CONSIDERED DURING EVALUATION. ANOTHER WAY TO IMPROVE THE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS IS TO COMBINE THE KOTITSCHKE METHOD WITH ANOTHER METHOD; FOR EXAMPLE THE AXLE MASS FORCE IS DETERMINED AS WITH THE KOTITSCHKE PROCEDURE AND THE FORCES ACTING ON THE AXLE ARE DIRECTLY MEASURED AND ADDED TO THE AXLE MASS FORCE.
