REDUCTION OF THE COEFFICIENT OF IGNORANCE REGARDING THE BEHAVIOUR OF PIPES ON CONSTRUCTION SITES

WHEN THE CHOICE OF THE TYPE OF PIPE IS MADE AFTER A STUDY OF THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF COMPRESSION AND CRUSHING LOAD OF THE SOIL IN EMBANKMENTS AND TRAFFIC FLOW, THE COEFFICIENT OF SAFETY DIMINISHES AND INCLUDES ONLY THE UNCERTAINTY REGARDING THE DISTRIBUTION OF ELEMENTS IN THE INTERIOR OF ACCEPTED SECTIONS OF CONTRACT AND THE NECESSITY OF ENSURING THAT THE PERMANENT WORKING LOADS DO NOT COINCIDE WITH THE LIMITING FAILURE LOAD. IN THIS STUDY, RECOURSE IS MADE TO THE THEORIES OF MARSTON, WETZORKE AND BOUSSINESQ IN ORDER TO CALCULATE THE WEIGHT OF SOIL AND OF TRAFFIC FOR A SEMI-RIGID PIPE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE DECISIVE SAFETY COEFFICIENTS NU 1 AND NU 2 FOR INTERNAL PRESSURE AND FOR CRUSHING FAILURE UNDER WORKING LOAD, ARE OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE IN PRACTICE; THEY GIVE THE ACTUAL SAFETY OF THE PIPE UNDER WORKING CONDITIONS AND MAY NOT BE REPLACED, AS IS COMMONLY DONE, BY THE COEFFICIENT OF SAFETY DUE TO INTERNAL PRESSURE CAUSED BY MACHINE.
