IN OFFICIAL ACCIDENT STATISTICS LITTLE IMPORTANCE IS ATTACHED TO THE IMPAIRMENT OF DRIVING APTITUDE BY DRUGS. ON THE OTHER HAND THOSE AFFECTED BY ALCOHOL PROVIDE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT INFORMATION WHEN QUESTIONED BY DOCTORS DURING BLOOD SAMPLING. BETWEEN 1960 AND 1976, THE PROPORTION OF PEOPLE WHO HAD TAKEN DRUGS IN THE 24 HOURS BEFORE BLOOD SAMPLES WERE TAKEN INCREASED FROM 10 TO 26 PERCENT (1975), AND 21 PERCENT (1976). THESE FIGURES ARE CONFIRMED BY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY AND MASS SPECTROMETRY STUDIES OF THE BLOOD SAMPLES, IN THAT THE NUMBER OF POSITIVE CASES OF DRUG INTAKE IN ROAD USERS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS WAS OF THE ORDER OF 10 - 20 PERCENT. THIS CONFIRMS STATEMENTS MADE DURING THE QUESTIONING OF ROAD USERS BY DOCTORS WITH RESPECT TO THE FREQUENCY OF DRUG INTAKE. THE DISCREPANCY WITH THE STATISTICS IS OBVIOUS. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 311057.
