THE IMPACT AND INJURY MECHANICS OF CYCLISTS WITHIN THE NORMAL RANGE OF SPEED

ZUR AUFPRALL- UND VERLETZUNGSMECHANIK VON RADFAHRERN IM EIGENGESCHWINDIGKEITSBEREICH

AS PART OF A STUDY INTO THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS REAR SHAPES FOR THE PORSCHE 911, TESTS WERE UNDERTAKEN WITH DUMMIES TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE MECHANICS OF INJURY IN CYCLE TO CAR COLLISIONS. THE AUTHORS REPORT ON THE STRAIGHT, CENTRAL IMPACT. DUMMIES OF A MAN AND A 6 YEAR OLD CHILD WERE USED. THE BICYCLE WAS IMPACTED AGAINST THE PARKED CAR AT SPEEDS OF 17 AND 24 KM/H. THE AUTHORS REPORT ON THE TESTS AND THE COLLISION PHASES. THE RANGE OF SPEED OF UP TO 35 KM PER HOUR IS THAT IN WHICH THE CYCLIST HAS A REAL CHANCE OF SURVIVAL IN IMPACTS. THE CONSEQUENCES OF INJURY ARE VARIED. THE HEAD IS ESPECIALLY AT RISK IF IMPACT WITH THE ROAD CANNOT BE PREVENTED. PEAK DECELERATIONS OF UP TO NEARLY 300 G WERE RECORDED, AND THESE MUST LEAD IN REAL ACCIDENTS TO VERY SEVERE SKULL - BRAIN - TRAUMA. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 311057.
