THE INJURIES ARE PARTICULARLY SERIOUS BECAUSE THEY ARE MOSTLY OPEN MULTIPLE FRACTURES IN WHICH THERE IS A DANGER OF BONE AND TISSUE INFECTION; TREATMENT MAY TAKE TWO TO THREE YEARS, AND CHRONIC ILLNESS OFTEN RESULTS. 54 PERCENT OF THE MOTORCYCLIST CASUALTIES SUFFERED PERMANENT CONSEQUENCES. CALCULATIONS CARRIED OUT AT THE CLINIC ON ALL THE MOTORCYCLISTS UNDERLINE THE DANGERS INHERENT IN MOTORCYCLE SPORTS, AND THE HIGH COSTS INVOLVED IN TREATMENT.
