EFFECT OF METHODS OF PROTECTION ON INJURIES TO RIDERS OF MOTORIZED TWO WHEELED VEHICLES

EINFLUSS DER SCHUTZMASSNAHMEN AUF DIE VERLETZUNGEN MOTORISIERTER ZWEIRADFAHRER

BETWEEN 1968 AND 1978 918 PATIENTS WERE EXAMINED IN THE UNIVERSITY CLINIC AT HEIDELBERG AFTER HAVING SUFFERED A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT. THE MOST FREQUENT INJURIES WERE TO THE LOWER AND UPPER EXTREMITIES AND TO THE SKULL, THE HEAD INJURIES BEING THE MOST FREQUENT CAUSE OF DEATH. THE NUMBER OF OPEN FRACTURES WAS PARTICULARLY HIGH. BY MEANS OF SUITABLE PROTECTION SUCH AS INTEGRAL HELMETS AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING IT IS POSSIBLE TO REDUCE THE MORE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES, ESPECIALLY OF SKULL INJURIES, AND TO DECREASE THE NUMBER OF OPEN FRACTURES. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 311057.
