PROTECTION OF THE CYCLIST - TECHNICAL POSSIBILITIES

SCHUTZ DES ZWEIRADFAHRERS - MOEGLICHKEITEN AUS TECHNISCHER SICHT

A SLIGHT DECREASE IN THE RISK OF MOTORCYCLISTS BEING INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS SHOWS THAT EFFORTS TO IMPROVE SAFETY HAVE NOT BEEN IN VAIN. FURTHER STUDIES SHOULD TAKE MORE ACCOUNT OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING MOFA (GERMAN LOW SPEED MOPED) RIDERS. IN ACCIDENTS THOSE RIDERS HAVE A PRONOUNCED RISK OF SUSTAINING HEAD INJURIES, AND IN THEIR OWN INTERESTS THEY SHOULD WEAR PROTECTIVE HELMETS. BASIC STUDIES HAVE PROVIDED NEW INFORMATION ON ACCIDENT CHARACTERISTICS, COLLISION TYPE AND RISK OF INJURY RELATING TO ACCIDENTS INVOLVING TWO-WHEELED VEHICLES. ATTEMPTS SHOULD BE MADE TO INFLUENCE THE COURSE OF MOVEMENT OF THE CYCLIST DURING COLLISIONS, AND TO AVOID THE HARD, DIRECT IMPACT ON THE OTHER VEHICLE INVOLVED IN THE COLLISION. CRASH HELMETS ARE STILL THE DECISIVE FACTOR IN INJURY REDUCTION, AND OF THESE, INTEGRAL HELMETS OFFER THE BEST PROTECTION. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 311057.
