INJURIES UNDER THREE-POINT SAFETY BELTS. RESULTS OF A STUDY OF VEHICLE OCCUPANTS

VERLETZUNGEN UNTER DREIPUNKT-SICHERHEITSGURTEN. ERGEBNISSE EINER STUDIE AN FAHRZEUGINSASSEN

WHEREAS WITH UNBELTED OCCUPANTS SEVERE INJURIES OF THE SKULL, THE LOWER EXTREMITIES AND THE RIB-CAGE PREDOMINATE, THERE IS A DIFFERENT INJURY PATTERN WITH THE WEARERS OF THREE-POINT SAFETY BELTS. THE MOST FREQUENT LOCATION OF INJURY IS THE THORAX AND, FOLLOWING THIS, THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN AND THE ABDOMEN. THE NUMBER OF FACIAL INJURIES INVOLVING FACIAL BONE FRACTURES IS NOTABLY HIGH. THE PROTECTION AFFORDED BY THE BELT IS SHOWN BY THE RELATIVELY RARE OCCURRENCE OF SEVERE BRAIN TRAUMA. IT CANNOT BE CONCLUDED THAT SEVERE AND VERY SEVERE INJURIES OCCUR WITH SAFETY BELTS, BUT TYPICAL PATTERNS OF INJURY CAN BE SEEN FROM THOSE EXAMINED. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 311057.
