ROAD TRAFFIC INVOLVEMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

STRASSENVERKEHRSBETEILIGUNG VON KINDERN UND JUGENDLICHEN

BASIC DATA WERE OBTAINED ON THE TYPE, DURATION, FREQUENCY AND PURPOSE OF THE INVOLVEMENT IN TRAFFIC OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY. THE RANDOM SAMPLE WAS DETERMINED BY MEANS OF A MULTI-STAGE SELECTION PROCEDURE. THE DATA WERE OBTAINED BY MEANS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE. IN ADDITION THE POSSIBLE EFFECT OF SOCIAL-DEMOGRAPHIC, ECONOMIC, REGIONAL, SEASONAL AND METEOROLOGICAL FACTORS WAS EXAMINED. THE RESULTS ARE CLASSIFIED BY AGE AND SEX. THE STUDY SHOWED THAT (1) AS REGARDS ANY TRAFFIC INVOLVEMENT, THE DISTRIBUTION OVER 24 HRS OF WAYS TO AND FROM DESTINATIONS, THE LENGTH AND DURATION OF THE JOURNEYS AND CHOICE OF TRANSPORT MODE ARE ESPECIALLY DEPENDENT ON AGE, SEX, DEGREE OF URBANISATION OF THE RESIDENTIAL AREA AND THE INSTITUTIONS ATTENDED (E.G. TYPE OF SCHOOL); (2) THE 3-17 YEAR OLD AGE GROUP STUDIED IS UNEXPECTEDLY HETEROGENEOUS WITH RESPECT TO VARIABLES WHICH CONDITION TRAFFIC INVOLVEMENT; (3) THE BICYCLE IS ALREADY BEING USED ON THE JOURNEY TO AND FROM THE KINDERGARTEN.
