SKID RESISTANCE STUDIES BY BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS

THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS COOPERATED WITH 17 STATES IN A PROGRAM OF PAVEMENT SKID TESTING DURING THE SUMMER OF 1968. THE BPR TEST TRAILER AND TOW TRUCK WAS FURNISHED AND OPERATED IN COOPERATION WITH THE STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS. TO MAKE A SERIES OF PAVEMENT SKID RESISTANCE TESTS. SUMMARY DATA ARE PRESENTED FOR 10 STATES IN REGIONS 1 AND 8. ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS WERE FOUND TO HAVE HIGHER SKID NUMBERS THAN PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE. HOWEVER, THE MAJORITY OF PAVEMENTS OF BOTH TYPES WERE FOUND TO HAVE WHAT WOULD USUALLY BE CONSIDERED ADEQUATE SKID RESISTANCE. THERE IS A GENERAL TREND OF LOWER SKID RESISTANCE WITH INCREASED TRAFFIC EXPOSURE. CHIP SEAL SURFACES TESTED GENERALLY HAD A HIGHER SKID RESISTANCE, BUT THE VARIBILITY OF SKID NUMBERS WAS THE ONLY VALUABLE CONSIDERED IN THIS PRESENTATION. THE STATES WILL CONSIDER OTHER FACRTORS SUCH AS AGGREGATE TYPE, MIX DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES AND SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE A MUCH BETTER EVALUATION OF THE SKID QUALITIES OF THEIR PAVEMENTS USING THIS INFORMATION.
