THE OBJECTIVE OF THE "INTEGRATED PUBLIC TRANSPORT CONCEPT FOR THE REGION OF STUTTGART", PART OF WHICH CONSISTED OF THE RESTRUCTURING OF REGIONAL BUS TRANSPORT, WAS TO ATTAIN IMPROVED PUBLIC TRANSPORT CONDITIONS AND ENCOURAGE SOME PRIVATE TRANSPORT TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT. THE TRAFFIC ENGINEERING INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF STUTTGART WAS COMMISSIONED TO DEVELOP A REGIONAL BUS NETWORK HAVING AN OPTIMUM ACCESS FUNCTION AND GEARED TOWARDS THE FUTURE LINKING OF FAST RAILWAY AND URBAN TRAMWAY, AND TO DETERMINE THE QUANTITATIVE TRAFFIC RELATIONS BETWEEN REGIONAL BUS NETWORK AND RAIL NETWORK. THE REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES ON THE RAIL AND EXISTING BUS NETWORK (URBAN, LONG DISTANCE AND REGIONAL BUS LINES) AND GIVES A SURVEY OF THE DECISION CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING THE COMPETITION BETWEEN THESE TWO TRAFFIC SYSTEMS. AS IN THE FIRST INSTANCE THIS IS TO BE SEEN FROM THE VIEW OF THE CUSTOMER, THE JOURNEY TIMES TO VARIOUS DESTINATIONS, THE NUMBER AND POSITION OF STATIONS AND BUS STOPS AND THE FREQUENCY OF SERVICES AND THEIR DISTRIBUTION OVER THE DAY WERE COMPARED. THE LINES IN QUESTION WERE ALSO SUBJECTED TO ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC STUDIES (ORIGIN DESTINATION SURVEYS). THE RESULT OF THIS FIRST STAGE OF THE REGIONAL STUDY WAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED BUS NETWORK WHICH IS ILLUSTRATED IN THE REPORT.
