ROLLING RESISTANCE AND FUEL CONSUMPTION IN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

IN LORRIES AND BUSES THE COSTS OF FUEL REPRESENT A LARGE PROPORTION OF TOTAL COSTS. OF THE WHOLE ENERGY CONTENT OF PRIMARY ENERGY, 30 PERCENT MAY BE USED FOR OVERCOMING ROLLING RESISTANCES. TO SAVE FUEL IT IS NECESSARY TO DECREASE THE RESISTANCES TO MOVEMENT (ROLLING RESISTANCE, AIR RESISTANCE, GRADIENT, ACCELERATION). DIAGRAMS SHOW THAT ROLLING RESISTANCE CAN HARDLY BE DECREASED FURTHER, BUT AIR RESISTANCE CAN BE SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED BY AIR FOILS AND PLATES. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO DECREASE GRADIENTS AND ACCELERATION BY BETTER DESIGN OF ROADS.
