COLOUR BLINDNESS AND DRIVING APTITUDE BIBLIOGRAPHY

FARBSINNSTOERUNGEN UND KRAFTFAHREIGNUNG

AN EXTENSIVE SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE WAS MADE (OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL WORKS) ON THE SUBJECT OF COLOUR BLINDNESS AND ROAD TRAFFIC. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE MAJORITY OF PUBLICATIONS CONTAINED CONSIDERATIONS AND OPINIONS; ONLY A FEW EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATIONS HAD BEEN MADE. A DISCREPANCY APPEARS TO EXIST BETWEEN CONSIDERATIONS BASED ON THEORY AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE OF COLOUR-BLIND PEOPLE IN TRAFFIC. LABORATORY AND PERCEPTION EXPERIMENTS SHOW THAT THERE IS AN INCREASE IN REACTION TIME AND ALSO AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ERRORS OF COLOUR BLIND PEOPLE WHEN VISIBILITY IS DIFFICULT; NONE OF THE PUBLICATIONS, HOWEVER, SHOWED AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS OR A TENDENCY TOWARDS CERTAIN TYPES OF ACCIDENTS. IT MUST BE, HOWEVER, POINTED OUT THAT UNDER MORE DIFFICULT CONDITIONS OF VISIBILITY THE PROBABILITY OF COLOUR BLIND DRIVERS OF NOT RECOGNIZING, RECOGNIZING TOO LATE OR MISINTERPRETING COLOURED TRAFFIC SIGNALS IS GREATER THAN FOR NORMAL DRIVERS. THE FACT THAT NO INCREASE IN RELATED ACCIDENTS CAN BE SHOWN IS EXPLAINED USING 3 HYPOTHESES.
