FIGURES ON TRAFFIC NOISE

VERKEHRSLAERM IN ZAHLEN

IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY 45 MILLION PEOPLE ARE EXPOSED TO EXTERNAL NOISE LEVELS OF MORE THAN 55 DB(A) AND 10 MILLION TO LEVELS OF MORE THAN 65 DB(A). MOST OF THE NOISE IS PRODUCED BY MORE THAN 20 MILLION CARS AND AROUND 1.1 MILLION LORRIES. DRIVERS CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCE THE NOISE PRODUCED BY THE WAY IN WHICH THEY DRIVE THEIR VEHICLES. AIRCRAFT AND RAIL TRAFFIC NOISE ARE DISTINGUISHED FROM ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE BY THEIR TIME STRUCTURE. DURING THE FLYING OVER, TAKING OFF AND LANDING OF AIRCRAFT AND DURING THE PASSING OF A TRAIN, SHORT-LIVED BUT VERY HIGH NOISE PEAKS OCCUR DURING PERIODS OF RELATIVE PEACE. IN VIEW OF THE PREPONDERANCE OF ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE THERE IS A NEED FOR DRIVER EDUCATION TO INCLUDE INSTRUCTION ON NOISE-CONSCIOUS DRIVING.
