POSSIBLE ERRORS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF THE SPEEDS OF VEHICLES

THE INACCURACY OF SPEEDOMETERS IN VEHICLES ARISES FROM THE BASIC INACCURACY OF THE EQUIPMENT (PERMISSIBLE ERRORS DURING MANUFACTURE), ADDITIONAL ERRORS (EFFECT OF TYRES, TEMPERATURE, POSITION AND VIBRATION), AND READ ERRORS. IT IS PROPOSED THAT THE LIMIT VALUES OF THE MEASURED ERRORS BE DETERMINED BY ALGEBRAIC ADDITION. BECAUSE OF THE MANY INFLUENCING FACTORS AND VARIABLE EFFECTS, TOTAL ERRORS WILL ALWAYS OCCUR WHICH ARE SMALLER THAN THOSE DETERMINED FROM THE ARITHMETIC ADDITION OF THE LIMIT VALUES. HOW LARGE THESE TOTAL ERRORS WILL BE IN THE INDIVIDUAL CASE CAN ONLY BE DETERMINED BY TECHNICAL STUDIES OF EACH PIECE OF EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLE. SINCE ACCORDING TO THE LATEST ECE REGULATIONS MINUS ERRORS ON THE WHOLE DISPLAY ARE NOT PERMITTED, TACHOMETERS WILL ALWAYS INDICATE A HIGHER SPEED THAN IS ACTUALLY THE CASE IF CHECKING IS TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ECE REGULATIONS.
