AGEING AND DRIVING APTITUDE WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO TRAFFIC DEMANDS

ALTERN UND LEISTUNGSFAEHIGKEIT UNTER BESONDERER BERUECKSICHTIGUNG DER VERKEHRSANFORDERUNGEN

THE STATISTICALLY PROVEN INCREASED RISK OF ACCIDENT TO OLDER ROAD USERS GAVE RISE TO AN INVESTIGATION OF THE REASONS FOR THIS. PERFORMANCE ASSOCIATED WITH OPTICAL AND ACOUSTICAL PERCEPTION DECREASES WITH AGE. TRAFFIC PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES SHOW THAT IN 70 YEAR OLDS VISUAL ACUITY AFTER THE ONSET OF DARKNESS IS IMPAIRED TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO DRIVE A MOTOR VEHICLE. UNFAVOURABLE CONCLUSIONS WERE DRAWN FOR OLDER PEOPLE FROM TESTS ON THE ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE; AS REGARDS SENSOMOTOR COORDINATION AND RIGHT-LEFT ORIENTATION THERE WAS A DROP IN PERFORMANCE BETWEEN THE 55TH AND 64TH YEAR. FROM THE RESULTS IT CAN BE ASSUMED THAT THERE IS A RELATION BETWEEN INCREASED ACCIDENT RISK AND THE DECREASE IN PERFORMANCE OF OLDER PEOPLE. AS REGARDS THE CONTROLLING OF OLDER ROAD USERS, ACCOUNT MUST BE TAKEN OF THE FACT THAT THEY USUALLY HAVE YEARS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE WHICH MAY COMPENSATE FOR REDUCED PERFORMANCE. PUTTING OLDER PEOPLE AT A DISADVANTAGE FINANCIALLY IS IN ANY CASE A MEASURE TO BE EXCLUDED.
