THE FORMATION OF TRACKING GROOVES IN ROLLED ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE CAUSES OF RUT FORMATION (HEAVY TRAFFIC, HIGH TEMPERATURES, LOW RESISTANCE TO DEFORMATION) IN ROLLED ASPHALT AS WELL AS THE VARIOUS METHODS FOR TESTING COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, BENDING STRENGTH, AXIAL AND SPLITTING TENSILE STRENGTH AND MARSHALL STABILITY AND NOTES THAT NONE OF THESE TESTS PROVIDES REALLY ADEQUATE ASSESSMENT OF THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF ROLLED ASPHALT. CONCERNING THE INFLUENCES ON THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF ROLLED ASPHALT THE AUTHOR POINTS TO CHANGES IN THE BITUMEN DUE TO OXIDATION AND POLYMERISATION, CHANGES IN PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION DUE TO THE TRAFFIC AND ALSO TO THE INFLUENCE OF BINDER CONTENT. THE FOLLOWING POSSIBILITIES OF IMPROVING THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF ROLLED ASPHALT ARE CITED: THE USE OF A HARDER GRADE OF BITUMEN, INCREASING THE GRIT CONTENT AND THE PROPORTION OF CRUSHED STONE SAND, REDUCTION OF THE AMOUNT OF BINDER CURRENTLY USED AND MODIFICATION OF THE BITUMEN BY THE ADDITION OF HIGH POLYMERS.
