THE INFLUENCE OF POLYMER ADDITIVES ON ASPHALT

THE GUIDELINES LAY DOWN SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROPERTIES OF THE MIX WITH A VIEW TO ATTAINING THE MAXIMUM DEFORMATION RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT PAVING LAYERS. EVEN SMALL VARIATIONS LEAD TO REDUCTIONS IN THE REQUIRED VALUES. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF POLYMERS, ADDITIVES OF SYNTHETIC MATERIALS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO COMPENSATE FOR THIS. THIS HAS BEEN PROVED IN THE LABORATORY ON SAMPLES OF GUSS ASPHALT AND ROLLED ASPHALT WITH POLYMER ADDITIVES AND BITUMEN MODIFIED WITH POLYMERS AND TESTS FOR INDENTATION RESISTANCE, MARSHALL STABILITY, VISCOSITY AND CREEP VALUES. THE POLYMER ADDITIVE WAS INCLUDED IN THE BINDER CONTENT. LONG TERM TESTS ON AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD WITH ADDED POLYMER DEMONSTRATED THE INFLUENCE OF THE ADDITIVE IN REDUCING WEAR. PAVEMENTS AT BUS STOPS IN URBAN AREAS WITH HIGH PROPORTIONS OF POLYMER SHOWED A LARGE NUMBER OF DEFECTS, ESPECIALLY CRACKS. FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE BEHAVIOUR OF POLYMER ADDITIVES ARE IN PROGRESS IN THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY OF THE FEDERAL MILITARY ACADEMY IN MUNICH.
