EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE MATERIAL COEFFICIENTS OF ASPHALT MIXTURES; BITUMEN AND ASPHALT PRIZE 1977

EXPERIMENTELLE BESTIMMUNG DER WERKSTOFFKENNWERTE VON ASPHALTMISCHUNGEN; BITUMEN UND ASPHALTPREIS 1977

IN THE PRUEFAMT FUER BAU VON LANDVERKEHRSWESEN (TESTING STATION FOR RURAL ROADS) OF THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF MUNICH A TESTING MACHINE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN WHICH SPECIMENS ARE SUBJECTED TO PULSATING SHEAR STRESS TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF VARYING THE BITUMEN CONTENT ON THE DYNAMIC SHEAR MODULUS AND THE TIME-SHEAR STRENGTH OF BITUMINOUS ROADBASES. NEVERTHELESS, THE REQUIREMENT OF STANDARDISED VOIDS CONTENT OF TEST SPECIMENS CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED THROUGH VARIATION IN THE FILLER AND SAND CONTENT AS WELL AS THROUGH SIMULTANEOUS VARIATIONS IN THE COMPACTION WORK. THE RESULTS DEMONSTRATE THE MARKED INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE ON THE DYNAMIC SHEAR MODULUS AND THE TIME-SHEAR STRENGTH. A HIGHER DEGREE OF STIFFNESS CAN BE ACHIEVED BY THE USE OF A HARDER BITUMEN OR BY A REDUCTION IN THE BITUMEN CONTENT, FACTORS WHICH IN THESE STUDIES ARE ALSO LINKED WITH CHANGES IN THE MIX DESIGN AND IN THE COMPACTION WORK. THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THE TIME-SHEAR STRENGTH DROPS WITH INCREASING VOIDS CONTENT, SO THAT IN THE CONTEXT OF A LIFE SPAN OF A BITUMEN ROADBASE, A LOW VOIDS CONTENT IS MORE FAVOURABLE THAN A HIGHER ONE, STILL REMAINS TO BE CRITICALLY EXAMINED BY MEANS OF SYSTEMATIC STUDIES WHICH TAKE INTO ACCOUNT ALL POSSIBLE VARIABLES AND THEIR VARIATIONS.
