ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN SOFT GROUND

STRASSENBAUTEN IN WEICHEN BOEDEN

IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE SPECIFIC WEIGHT OF EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT SUBSOILS, THE BARK OF TREES WAS HITHERTO USED IN MANY CASES IN NORWAY. SINCE 1972 EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE BOARD 0.5 M THICK, 1.0 X 3.0 M, AND HAVING A BULK DENSITY OF 20 KG/CBM HAS BEEN USED. THESE SLABS ARE MADE LIKE BRICKS. AN 0.10 M THICK CONCRETE SLAB IS LAID AS A LOAD DISTRIBUTOR; IT ALSO PROTECTS THE MATERIAL FROM OIL POLLUTION. ON TOP OF THIS COMES THE NORMAL ROAD PAVEMENT WITH AN ASPHALT SURFACING. A TABLE SHOWS THE AREAS WHERE THIS TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION HAS BEEN USED. THE ANNUAL CONSUMPTION OF SIPOREX-YTONG WAS 50000 CU M AT A PRICE OF 10 DM/CU M; OF LECA, 20000 CU M AT 17 DM/CU M, AND OF BARK 10000 CU M AT 1 DM/CU M. AN ATTEMPT IS BEING MADE TO USE FOAM CEMENT OR FOAM GYPSUM WITH A DENSITY OF 100 TO 400 KG/CU M IN SITU IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS LIGHTWEIGHT FORM OF CONSTRUCTION EVEN MORE ECONOMICAL.
