SOIL INVESTIGATIONS WITH PENETRATION TESTS ACCORDING TO DIN 4094

THE SUB-COMMITTEE "PENETRATION TESTS" OF THE GERMAN SOCIETY FOR SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1955, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY BECAME A SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE CONSTRUCTION DIVISION OF THE GERMAN STANDARDS INSTITUTION (DIN). ITS TASK WAS TO STANDARDISE THE VARIOUS TYPES OF PENETRATION TESTS CURRENT IN GERMANY AND TO INCORPORATE THE RESULTING PRINCIPLES IN A STANDARD. A REVIEW IS MADE OF THE SCOPE FOR SOILS INVESTIGATIONS ACCORDING TO DIN 4094, AND THE RESEARCH RESULTS UNDERLYING THE QUOTED QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS TOGETHER WITH AIDS FOR EVALUATION ARE DISCUSSED. THE ARTICLE DEALS ONLY WITH STATIC AND DYNAMIC PENETROMETERS, THEIR DEVELOPMENT AND MODE OF OPERATION, AS WELL AS CURRENT EVALUATION CRITERIA AND THE RELATION BETWEEN POINT RESISTANCE, IN-SITU DENSITY, ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION AND MODULUS OF RIGIDITY. KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOIL STRATA FROM BOREHOLES IS IMPORTANT. IT CAN BE CONCLUDED THAT FOR EQUAL IN-SITU DENSITY, THE PENETRATION RESISTANCE REDUCES WITH THE COMPACTABILITY, AND OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL INCREASES WITH PARTICLE SIZE. THE RESULTS AVAILABLE TO DATE ARE HOWEVER INSUFFICIENT TO DERIVE GENERALLY VALID RELATIONS FOR NON-COHESIVE SOILS.
