THE REASONS FOR THE FORMATION OF WAVES ON BITUMINOUS CARRIAGEWAY PAVEMENTS BEFORE HIGHLY-LOADED CROSSINGS AND INTERSECTIONS ARE DESCRIBED. EXPERIMENTS WITH METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION - SUCH AS THOSE UNDERTAKEN IN THE REGION ADMINISTERED BY THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT OF BREMEN - FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF LARGE DISTORTIONS IN REGIONS OF TAIL-BACKS ARE DESCRIBED WITH REFERENCE TO THE MATERIALS USED IN THE MIX AND THE CONSTRUCTION THICKNESSES CHOSEN. FOR ROAD RENEWAL WORKS IN BREMEN THE AUTHORITIES HAVE CHANGED OVER TO USING GUSS ASPHALT AS A WEARING COURSE FROM THE OUTSET IN AREAS OF HIGH BRAKING FORCES. THE REMAINING ROAD SECTIONS HOWEVER HAVE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WEARING COURSES. IN ADDITION IT IS HOPED, BY THE USE OF A HIGHER PROPORTION OF THE LARGEST AGGREGATE, COMBINED WITH A LOW BINDER CONTENT, THAT DEFORMATION RESISTANCE IS IMPROVED SUCH THAT THE FORMATION OF WAVES IS AVOIDED.
