REPAIR WORK ON THE TAKE-OFF AND LANDING RUNWAY AT STUTTGART AIRPORT

FOR THE SITE ESTABLISHMENT THERE WERE 60000 SQUARE METRES AVAILABLE OF WHICH 26000 SQUARE METRES WAS TAKEN UP BY EARTH-MOVING EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS STORAGE AND MIXING PLANT FOR THE WATER-BOUND BASE AND 34000 SQUARE METRES FOR CONCRETE MIXING AND LAYING EQUIPMENT. FOR THE BASE MATERIAL THREE ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUS MIXING MACHINES (HUTHER) WERE USED WITH PERFORMANCES OF 450 AND 200 TONNES PER HOUR, TWO FULLY AUTOMATIC MIXING MACHINES (ELBA AND ARBAU) AND THE NECESSARY SILOS FOR CEMENT. FOR LAYING THE CONCRETE SLABS EIGHT PAVERS WITH THE NECESSARY ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT WERE PROVIDED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE COMPREHENSIVE PLANT USED ON THE EARTHWORKS. THE TOTAL PLANT PROVIDED COST 25 MILLION DM. THERE WERE 17250 TONNES OF WATER-BOUND BASE AND 11200 SQUARE METRES OF CONCRETE PAVEMENT LAYED. THE MAXIMUM STAFF COMPLEMENT CONSISTED OF 9 ENGINEERS, 8 FOREMEN, 30 SECTION FOREMEN, 230 OPERATORS AND TRADESMEN AT A WORKING PERIOD OF 6 TO 22 HOURS IN SHIFT WORK. THE PROGRAMME PLANNING, BREAKING-UP OF THE EXISTING CONCRETE SLAB, MEASURES TO OBTAIN A LOAD BEARING FORMATION, THE LAYING OF THE BASE AND PRODUCTION OF THE CONCRETE SLAB ARE DESCRIBED. THE SUB-BASE CONSISTS PARTLY OF A NATURAL SAND-LIMESTONE LAYER OVER A LAYER OF MESH AND PARTLY OF 20 CM OF GROUND IMPROVEMENT. DURING LAYING OF THE WATER-BOUND BASE 520 TONNES PER HOUR WERE ACHIEVED DAILY. THE 50 METRE WIDE TAKE-OFF AND LANDING RUNWAY WAS CONCRETED IN SEVEN STRIPS. THE PEAK LAYING RATE FOR ONE 5 METRE WIDE CONCRETE STRIP WAS 913 METRES PER DAY. DATA IS GIVEN ON THE CONCRETE STRENGTH, REINFORCEMENT AND JOINT LAYOUT.
