PLANNING AND PREPARATIONS FOR THE REPAIR OF THE STARTING AND LANDING RUNWAYS AT STUTTGART AIRPORT

SAMPLES TAKEN DURING PERIODS OF NO FLIGHTS AT NIGHT SHOWED VARYING GROUND CONDITIONS WITH LOW LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY ACCOMPANIED BY A HIGH WATER TABLE. THE SUBSOIL WAS IMPROVED USING A NATURAL SAND-CRUSHED LIMESTONE COURSE OVER A LAYER OF MESH AND AT ANOTHER LOCATION USING GROUND STABILISATION FOLLOWING FULL-SCALE TESTS. FOLLOWING DESIGN-DIMENSIONING CONSIDERATIONS IT WAS FOUND THAT A 40 CM THICK WATER-BOUND BASE COURSE WAS NECESSARY. THE CHOSEN DEEP CONSTRUCTION WITH A CONCRETE SLAB PROVED TO BE MORE FAVOURABLE THAN RAISED CONSTRUCTION. THE COMBINED EFFECTS ARE DESCRIBED FOR THE AREAS INVOLVED, THE CONSTRUCTION TIMING AND PROGRAMMING. THE FOLLOWING PERFORMANCE RATES WERE OBTAINED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION: 40000 SQUARE METRES OF CONCRETE SLAB TO BE BROKEN UP, REMOVED AND GRADED, 40000 SQUARE METRES OF SOIL-STABILISATION, 15000 SQUARE METRES OF WATER-BOUND BASE, 40000 SQUARE METRES OF CONCRETE SLAB 26 CM THICK, 4000 METRES OF FLEXIBLE PIPING (LIGHTING), 13000 METRES OF JOINTS. A SURVEY OF THE SEQUENCE-PLANNING IS REPRODUCED. THE DOCUMENTS OF TENDER WERE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE METHOD NORMALLY USED BY STUTTGART CITY AUTHORITIES AND THE SUCCESSFUL CONTRACTOR WAS A CONSORTIUM MADE UP OF KIRCHHOFF, G EPPLE AND WOLFER & GOEBEL.
