PRE-CAST UNITS IN URBAN AREAS

THIS IS A REPORT ON STRUCTURES WHICH WERE CONSTRUCTED IN RECENT YEARS USING PRE-CAST CONCRETE UNITS. THE FOLLOWING ARE MENTIONED AS ADVANTAGES: REDUCED OR EVEN COMPLETE LACK OF TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS, THE ECONOMIC MANUFACTURE OF LARGE QUANTITIES OF UNITS, POSSIBILITIES FOR VARYING THE DIMENSIONS AND SURFACE TREATMENT. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN OF A PEDESTRIAN SUBWAY WHICH WAS HYDRAULICALLY JACKED IN UNITS WEIGHING 175 TONNES IN AN OPEN TRENCH DURING A WEEKEND. IN ADDITION THE JACKING OF A 5000 TONNE UNDERPASS FOR A TRUNK ROAD BENEATH A RAILWAY STATION IS DESCRIBED, TOGETHER WITH THE STABILIZING OF AN OPEN EXCAVATION WITH 2.25 SQUARE METRE REAR-SUSPENDED WALL UNITS. RETAINING BLOCKS CAN BE USED IN PLACE OF SLOPING EMBANKMENT SURFACES, THEREBY GAINING AREAS IN FRONT FOR GARDENS. EXAMPLES ARE SHOWN OF RETAINING WALLS AND NOISE PROTECTION WALLS OF DIFFERENT SIZES AND DESIGN. IN SOME OF THESE IT IS POSSIBLE TO PLANT VEGETATION ON THE VISIBLE SIDE. AS A PROTECTION MEASURE AGAINST SPRAY FROM VEHICLES IN NARROW CITY STREETS 200 X 75 X 7 CENTIMETRE REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS ARE USED. THESE ARE PLACED IN DOUBLE-T BEAMS AND ARE THEREFORE EASY TO REPLACE.
