THE USE OF FLAME CLEANING FOR DE-RUSTING AS A SURFACE PREPARATION IN STEEL BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

AN ADDITION TO DE-RUSTING BY SAND BLASTING, FLAME CLEANING IS ALSO A POSSIBLE METHOD OF SURFACE PREPARATION FOR DECK SURFACES AND OTHER STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF BRIDGES. ORTHOTROPIC DECK PLATES OFFER FAVOURABLE WORKING CONDITIONS FOR THE FLAME CLEANING. WORK ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE PLATES IS DIFFICULT AS OVERHEAD WORK IS NECESSARY. WHERE ACCESS IS DIFFICULT, FLAME CLEANING IS COMBINED WITH FLAME PHOSPHATE TREATMENT. TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE DECK PLATE OF THICKNESS FROM 10 TO 14 MM PRODUCED, DEPENDING ON THE CLEANLINESS, ON THE BURNING RATE OF 3 METRES/MINUTE AND ON THE SEQUENCE OF RUNS, MAXIMUM VALUES OF 100 TO 140 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. THE TEMPERATURES WERE MEASURED WITH GLUED-ON CHROME/:ALUMEL-FOIL THERMO-ELEMENTS WITH AN ACCURACY OF MINUS 3 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. ON THE WERRA VALLEY BRIDGE AT HEDEMUENDEN A COMPARISON WAS POSSIBLE BETWEEN FLAME DE-RUSTED AND SAND BLASTED AREAS. FLAME DE-RUSTING CAN UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS BE TAKEN AS HAVING EQUAL VALUE AS OTHER DE-RUSTING METHODS FOR SURFACE PREPARATION IN STEEL ROAD BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION.
