AS SUMMER TEMPERATURES CAUSED EXPANSION PROBLEMS AT JOINTS BETWEEN SLABS AND AT DUMMY JOINTS DUE TO OCCASIONAL HIGH COMPRESSIVE STRESSES, SEVERAL 2000 M LONG EXPERIMENTAL ROADS WERE BUILT BETWEEN 1964 AND 1966 IN THE BOUNDARY AREA OF MAGDEBURG AND BETWEEN LUEBBENAU AND DRESDEN, WHERE EXPANSION JOINTS WERE INCLUDED FOR THE FIRST TIME TO TAKE CARE OF END MOVEMENTS ON ACCOUNT OF TEMPERATURE RISES. THE SYSTEM OF FORCES FOR CONCRETE ROADS WITHOUT EXPANSION JOINTS IS ILLUSTRATED ASSUMING DIVERSE LOADING CONDITIONS. TAKING THESE CALCULATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION AND THE MEASUREMENTS DERIVED FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL ROAD SECTIONS, ROAD CONSTRUCTION WITHOUT EXPANSION JOINTS IS PERMISSIBLE FOR SLAB THICKNESSES GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 18 CM, ACCORDING TO THE NEW SPECIFICATION OF STANDARD TGL 16237/01 "LAYING OF ROAD SURFACES, CONCRETE WEARING COURSES, TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS". IT IS NECESSARY HOWEVER THAT FOR CONSTRUCTION TEMPERATURES OF GREATER THAN 10 DEGREES C AN EXPANSION TOLERANCE OF 80 MM IS PROVIDED AND FOR LESS THAN 10 DEGREES C THE AMOUNT IS 100 MM. DUMMY JOINTS SHOULD BE CLOSED WITH AN ELASTIC MATERIAL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE; THIS WILL AVOID THE SETTLING OF DEBRIS IN THE JOINT WHICH COULD RESTRAIN LONGITUDINAL EXPANSION DUE TO TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS. ADVICE IS GIVEN ON REPAIR WORK.
