WAYS OF DECREASING PAH (POLY-AROMATIC HYDROCARBON) EMISSIONS FROM COMBUSTION ENGINES

MOEGLICHKEITEN DER VERRINGERUNG DER PAH-EMISSIONEN BEI VERBRENNUNGSMOTOREN

EMISSIONS OF POLY-AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS AND TOTAL HYDROCARBONS (HC) FROM AN IDLING, WATER-COOLED INJECTION OTTO ENGINE USING LEAD-FREE SUPER BENZINE ARE ILLUSTRATED IN RELATION TO THE COMBUSTION AIR RATIO LAMBDA. IF THE MIX IS MADE LEANER THE PROPORTION OF PAH IN THE HC EMISSION IS REDUCED, AND AT THE SAME TIME THE PROPORTION OF CARCINOGEN PAH IN THE TOTAL PAH EMISSION (SIGMA-PAH) IS REDUCED. USING A CATALYSER THE CONVERSION RATES OF PAH ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF HC AND CARBON MONOXIDE (CO). THE DEGREE OF PAH CONVERSION IN REDUCING AND OXIDISING ATMOSPHERE AND WITH AN IDLING CATALYSER IS OF THE SAME ORDER OF MAGNITUDE AS THAT OF HC. BELOW THE STARTING TEMPERATURE AND WITH SIMULATED CATALYSER COLD START THE CONVERSION RATES OF THE PAH ARE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER THAN THOSE OF HC AND CO. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN THE CONVERSION RATES OF INDIVIDUAL PAH WERE NOT APPARENT. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT A DECREASE IN THE PAH EMISSIONS OF OTTO ENGINES CAN BE ACHIEVED BY OVER-STOICHIOMETRIC ENGINE OPERATION (LAMBDA GREATER THAN 1) AND BY CATALYSERS.
