CONSTRUCTIVE PROTECTION OF PEDESTRIANS

KONSTRUKTIVER FUSSGAENGERSCHUTZ

STATISTICS SHOW THAT ALMOST EVERY SECOND TRAFFIC FATALITY IN TOWNS IS A PEDESTRIAN; THE LATTER THEREFORE NEEDS GREATER PROTECTION. COMPLETE SEGREGATION OF MOTORIZED TRAFFIC IS ONLY POSSIBLE TO A LIMITED EXTENT (PEDESTRIAN PRECINCTS), BUT MORE RISK-CONSCIOUS BEHAVIOUR ON BOTH SIDES IS POSSIBLE. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES ACTIVE PROTECTION OF PEDESTRIANS - OPTIMUM FUNCTIONING OF VEHICLES AND PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS - AND PASSIVE PROTECTION - DECREASING THE CONSEQUENCES OF ACCIDENTS BY MODIFYING VEHICLES TO SUITE PEDESTRIANS, ESPECIALLY THE FRONTS OF VEHICLES, HEADLAMPS AND MIRRORS.
