A BREATHALYSER BASED ON INFRARED ABSORPTION IS DESCRIBED. THE EFFECT OF THE VERY HIGH ABSORPTION BEHAVIOUR OF ETHYL ALCOHOL IS UTILIZED AT A WAVE LENGTH OF 3.4 MU-M. THE MEASURING CHAMBER IS SAID TO EXHIBIT A VOLUME WHICH IS AS SMALL AS POSSIBLE AND HAS A VERY LOW FLOW RESISTANCE. THE INSTRUMENT IS DESCRIBED WITH RESPECT TO CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION. DETERMINATION OF THE BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT IS VERY ACCURATE, THE OPERATION OF THE INSTRUMENT IS SIMPLE, REQUIRES LITTLE TIME AND IS ALMOST FREE FROM MAINTENANCE. INTERNAL INDUSTRIAL UTILIZATION IS POSSIBLE IF THE RELEVANT VOLUNTEER IS PREPARED TO SUBJECT HIMSELF TO THE TEST.
