AUTOMATED TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM IN THE USSR

AUTOMATISIERTE VERKEHRSSTEUERUNGSSYSTEME IN DER UDSSR

IN THE USSR EFFORTS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR MANY YEARS TO TAKE EFFECTIVE TECHNICAL PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AGAINST THE EXPECTED AVALANCHE OF TRAFFIC IN THE CITIES WHICH RESULTS FROM THE RAPIDLY GROWING PRODUCTION OF CARS. UNDER THE DESCRIPTION ASS-UD, AUTOMATIC TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR ALL LARGE CITIES ARE EXPECTED TO BE ADOPTED IN INCREASING NUMBERS. THIS SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A COMPLEX OF UNITS OF TECHNICAL FACILITIES FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL IN ADDITION TO A DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM WITH A MODULAR BUILD UP. THE ASS-UD SYSTEM CAN BE USED IN CONTROL AREAS AT 3 LEVELS: (1) SINGLE INTERCHANGES WITH CONTROL ALGORITHMS FOR TRAFFIC-DEPENDENT CONTROL; (2) ROAD STRETCHES AND SMALL CONTROL ZONES WITH THE CONTROL IN ACCORDANCE WITH PRESCRIBED COORDINATOR PROGRAMMES, IN WHICH THERE ARE POSSIBILITIES FOR LOCAL CORRECTIONS TO SO-CALLED CONFLICT POINTS; (3) LARGE AREAS OF CITIES AND WHOLE URBAN CONURBATIONS ON THE BASIS OF A FLEXIBLE COORDINATING PROGRAMME CHANGE IN WHICH THE ACTUAL TRAFFIC DATA AFFECT LOCAL CORRECTIONS, IF NECESSARY THE RE-DISTRIBUTION OF TRAFFIC FLOWS WHEN TAIL-BACKS EXIST AND THE GUARANTEE OF PRIORITY FOR THOSE VEHICLES ALREADY MENTIONED AND LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT. WITH THE ASS-UD SYSTEM THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF A TRANSITION FROM ONE CONTROL SYSTEM TO THE NEXT STAGE IN THE COMPLEX BY A CONTINUAL BUILD UP.
